Texas Basketball: Why Greg Brown makes Longhorns a 2020-21 title threat
3. Texas stacks up well against the rest of the Big 12
At a glance, only Kansas and Baylor have better rosters on paper than Texas.
However, if Baylor’s Jared Butler and/or MaCio Teague keep their names in the NBA draft, Texas could realistically jump the Bears based purely off of talent.
As for Kansas, the Jayhawks are awaiting word from the NCAA on looming violations, with a one-year postseason ban likely the punishment.
If those two things go in favor of Texas, the Longhorns could have a pretty clear path to a Big 12 Championship. Texas Tech and West Virginia could also serve as contenders, but the Longhorns won big games against both teams last season, and are in better shape than the two heading into next season.
In addition to pure talent, Texas will be the most experienced team in the conference next season. Kansas is losing most of their talent, while Texas Tech and West Virginia’s inexperience proved to be fatal flaws down the stretch.
Brown must make a big impact from day one, but considering the surrounding talent and the chemistry that this Texas team has, Brown should have no problem becoming a difference-maker from his first game on. If there’s any year for Texas to win the Big 12, it is this upcoming season, considering many circumstances.
Who’s to say the Longhorns’ ceiling isn’t even higher than just a conference championship?
