Season Outlook
While the loss of Nolley hurts, the additions the Virginia Tech Hokies made in the backcourt and on the wing should definitely give fans something to cheer about in 2020-21. Things moved quickly this past season for the Hokies and by season’s end, well, the final result showed it.
The Hokies won three of their final 13 games, but the good thing about all of it was they still overachieved. Expectations for Virginia Tech were very low but they still won seven games in the ACC with two freshmen leading the way in scoring.
Two freshmen probably won’t lead the scoring load in 2020-21, but the freshman class is definitely one with the potential and versatility to push this team to success. The addition of Mutts for another two seasons also gives them an athletic rebounding forward that can build and develop in Mike Young’s system for the next two years.
There will certainly be a lot of moving parts with Cartier Diarra and others joining the roster, but don’t expect a long drought of wins like Year 1 for Mike Young. He’s got this group’s ear and they’re a lot more talented than they were a year ago.
It wouldn’t be surprising if this Hokies group finished around 6th or 7th in the ACC after finishing 10th in 2018-19. With experience returning, some rebounding help on the interior, and all-around depth, Virginia Tech should certainly start to turn some heads with young guys leading the charge.
