Clemson football will score more in an ACC game than the basketball team

The 2019-20 basketball season saw Clemson Basketball average 65.1 points per game in ACC play and despite a foreseeable improvement this season, they will still be eclipsed by the football program when it comes to putting up the most points in any one individual game in the ACC.

On Oct. 17, 2020, Trevor Lawrence threw for 5 touchdowns as the Clemson Tigers defeated Georgia Tech Football 73-7. Those 73 points will be a higher total than the basketball squad scores in any ACC game this season. The loss of second-leading scorer Tevin Mack will contribute to that as Aamir Simms becomes the clear first-option on offense. Last season the Tigers scored more than 73 points in five games while being held under 60 points seven times.

The highs and lows the Tigers played through last season will even out as their average will increase with Simms, John Newman III, and Al-Amir Dawes doing the bulk of the scoring. The lack of a superstar, however, will prevent them from putting up 73 points in a game.

Plus, Clemson football still has four games left to play in the regular season, with one of them being against a Florida State team that surrenders 35 points per game on average. This provides Clemson Football an opportunity to put up a higher number that Clemson Basketball will not reach.
