Texas basketball came into this episode of the Red River Rivalry without their head coach Shaka Smart who tested positive for COVID-19 and the trio of Courtney Ramey, Jericho Sims, and Brock Cunningham.

K.T. Turner served as acting head coach and the Longhorns came out strong on the defensive end. The Sooners missed their first four shots to start the half and Matt Coleman III led the way offensively in the early going. He had seven early points.

Midway through the first half, the Sooners went on an 11-0 run to take a 19-16 lead thanks to De’Vion Harmon and Umoja Gibson.

After that, the Sooners never gave up the lead. They went into halftime with a 43-34 lead. Austin Reaves had a game-high 12 points and four rebounds. Coleman III had 11 points, three rebounds, and three assists.

The Sooners got to the free thrown line 17 times and made 10. The Longhorns were 4-of-8 from the charity strike.  That was the only distinct difference between the two sides. Their field goal and three-point percentages weren’t that far apart from one another.

Texas basketball fought hard in the second half to win, Oklahoma continued to exploit their foul troubles and barely left the Frank C. Erwin Special Events Center with an 80-79 victory.

The Sooners increased their series lead in the rivalry with an upset of a top-five team.

Reeves had a game-high 23 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Kai Jones led the way for the Longhorns with 15 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals, and two blocks.

The Longhorns will go on the crowd to face the Kentucky Wildcats in the Big 12/SEC Challenge Saturday at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN.

Oklahoma will play the No. 9 Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday in their Big 12/SEC Challenge matchup at 11 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
