NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing teams in play for 5-star guard Anthony Black
Oklahoma State Cowboys
After the success of presumptive No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Cade Cunningham, more five-star prospects seem to have been interested in the Cowboys. And they’re likely going to need more guards after next season, as all-around guard Isaac Likekele is entering his senior year, while double-digit scoring guard Avery Anderson III could be going pro if he has a breakout campaign himself.
If that happens, Black would be able to come in and have a giant role for this Big 12 program. He, forwards Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe and Kalib Boone, along with guards Bryce Thompson and Rondel Walker, would form a nice core that would be good enough to make the NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys don’t have the history that several of the other contenders do have but there’s a lot they currently have going for them, including a lot of potential playing time.
Texas Longhorns
For the record, the Longhorns are reportedly in the mix for Minnesota transfer guard Marcus Carr. Either way, he would only be around after one year, along with rising senior guards Courtney Ramey and Andrew Jones. Kentucky transfer Devin Askew is the only guaranteed guard on the projected 2022-23 roster, which leaves plenty of room for someone like Black to come in and have an impact early on.
If Black picks the Longhorns, he could be joining fellow local recruit and five-star prospect Keyonte George and they would be a great backcourt duo. However, as we’ve seen this offseason, head coach Chris Beard is willing to bring in quality transfers in the offseason. So if Black picks Texas in the Fall, he’ll have to be aware that the backcourt will look a lot different than what he committed to.
