Recruiting is starting to get back to normal with student-athletes being able to participate more in-person with coaches and visit potential universities that they may attend to continue their education and play NCAA basketball. Much has been made about the transfer portal and major programs are modifying their approach to recruiting student-athletes in the portal but the recruitment of high schoolers to commit to major programs is still a top priority for many division one coaches.

Three coaches of division one programs in the state of Michigan received great news, not from commitments from the transfer portal but verbal commitments from highly sought-after recruits. Building a strong 2022 recruiting class starts with the first or second commitment in order to develop a strong foundation in hopes of securing highly talented student-athletes.

Three programs in the state of Michigan appear to accomplish that first task in building their 2022 recruiting class. Let’s first take a look at the smaller less known program that received great news this week from the state of Arizona.

Oakland University and head coach Greg Kampe got some unexpected great news when Hillcrest Prep center high school recruit Mustapha ‘Momo’ Cisse committed to the Golden Grizzlies.

According to rivals.com, he had offers from Arizona, Georgia, Arizona State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, and more. He is a huge pick-up for Oakland and at 7′ 0″ 245 pounds, he will have an imidate impact in the Horizon League.

Michigan and head coach Juwan Howard picked up a big-time commitment when four-star big man Tarris Reed committed to the Wolverines.

Howard and his program continue to recruit very well as Reed is the second 2022 commitment for the Wolverines. Reed is a 6’9″ 230-pound center from Link Year Prep who should play immediately as a true freshman for the Wolverines once he arrives on campus.

The Spartans and Tom Izzo received the first commitment of their 2022 recruiting class when four-star point guard Trejuan Holloman announced that he would be attending Michigan State.

Izzo has had some bad luck of late on the recruiting trail but Holloman from Cretin Derham Hall high school is a big get for the Spartans. He is 6’2″ 175 pounds and is ranked the 11th best point guard in the class of 2022 according to 247 Sports.

Oakland, Michigan, and Michigan State all look forward to being able to participate in a full off-season with all three teams looking forward to continuing to recruit well and build on the foundation of their programs.

The Spartans, Wolverines, and Golden Grizzlies will more than likely play a full slate of games, unlike the last two seasons that were interrupted by COVID-19. Izzo, Howard, and Kampe are doing well on the recruiting trail and they hope to get two or three more commitments to solidify their 2022 recruiting classes.
