Point Guard

While the point guard role looks like it’s all but Jeremy Roach, the Blue Devils could find themselves shifting a guard or two in their 2021 recruiting class to the floor general spot.

That’s not to say Roach can’t play big minutes at the point guard spot. As a freshman, he played in 27.4 minutes of action per game and started 18 out of 24 contests, while putting together 8.7 ppg, 2.8 apg, and 2.2 rpg. With a full season under his belt, look for his game to turn a corner.

With departures last season in the backcourt, Duke basketball will have a young backcourt, so expect Trevor Keels and Jaylen Blakes to act as backups in early season action. Both have the ability to handle the ball and play either guard spot. Keels’ size at 6-foot-4 could play a factor in the role, in case the Blue Devils want to run with a bigger point guard.

Ultimately, it could be Blakes at the backup role, depending on who wins the shooting guard battle. Blakes is a willing passer at 6-foot-1 that dished out 3.5 apg as a junior at Blair Academy. He’s a big guard for his size at 201 pounds, though, so look for him to make a splash in 2021-22.
