Point Guard
Trey McGowens has the lead guard role locked up for Nebraska basketball heading into the season. He’s a 6-foot-4 guard that’s found his footing at the second stop of his college career after averaging 10.7 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.3 apg and 1.4 spg. He’s an athletic guard with a nice feel for the game as a scorer and facilitator that shot 36.7 percent from 3-point land this past year.
He’s the team’s top returning assist-maker from a season ago and with even more weapons on the floor, including his brother, look for his production as a distributor to rise in 2021-22.
McGowens will need to limit his turnovers in Year 2 in the rotation but with Derrick Walker back down low and more size added, that shouldn’t be an issue.
Behind McGowens, there’s Kobe Webster and Keisei Tominaga that should ease things a ton. Webster is the leader to play the backup spot after appearing in all 27 games in 2020-21, producing 8.1 ppg, 1.7 rpg and 1.3 apg while shooting 38 percent from 3-point range, primarily as a reserve.
Tominaga is another new face out of Ranger College (Texas) that should boost their perimeter shooting. The Japan native averaged 16.3 ppg while shooting 48.7 percent from 3-point land in 2020-21 to earn second-team NJCAA All-American honors. He knocked down a school-record 11 3-pointers last year as well. He’s a fast-starter on the perimeter.
