Arizona State basketball will have some holes to fill with the departure of Josh Christopher to the NBA and some losses in the transfer portal, but they gained talent right back from the portal entering the 2021-22 season. Head coach Bobby Hurley will welcome nine newcomers, including three transfers and a junior college addition to their ranks as they look to reload and get back to business after a disappointing 2020-21 season.

The Sun Devils will have a completely new backcourt to work with with the departures of Remy Martin (Kansas) and Alonzo Verge Jr. (Nebraska) but the players gained out of the transfer portal are players with experience and production under their belts already.

Jay Heath joins the ranks from Boston College, where he produced 14.5 ppg across 19 appearances, all starts, in 2020-21. D.J. Horne is another new addition out of the transfer portal from Illinois State. He averaged 15.1 ppg and 2.7 apg at the lead guard spot this past season for the Redbirds.

Marreon Jackson is the final addition out of Toledo, joining the roster as a graduate transfer. He filled the stat sheet in 2020-21 to take home the MAC Player of the Year award, so look for him to make an impact right away.

There are players that will have to prove themselves alongside the six returning names, but one thing is for sure: depth shouldn’t be an issue this season, especially in the frontcourt. Here’s a look at the 2021-22 season preview and outlook for Arizona State basketball.
