2021-22 season outlook

Xavier basketball has another favorable schedule with a rotation full of experienced veterans ready to fire on all cylinders. There should be no issues with team chemistry with a ton of players with starting experience returning to the lineup.

The Musketeers will have to prove themselves with their non-conference schedule in the early months and they’ll have plenty of chances with Ohio State, the Gavit TipOff Games, and NIT Preseason Tip-Off on the slate.

Coach Mack did his part in filling the void on the roster on the recruiting trail, adding four forwards who could contribute right away, including one potential starter in Jack Nunge. With their scoring leaders and energy guys back in Zach Freemantle and Paul Scruggs, there’s reason to believe this squad has a shot to challenge for a Big East basketball crown in 2021-22.

With plenty of guards to rely on in Dwon Odom, Adam Kunkel, Colby Jones, and others, Scruggs could see another boost in his assists numbers after posting a career-high this past season. There shouldn’t be any Covid pauses to derail their year this go around, which bodes well for their prospects. They’re a definite NCAA Tournament team with potential as an at-large single-digit draw when it’s all said and done.
