In one of the better match-ups of the Big 12/SEC challenge, Texas faces off against Tennessee.

TV schedule: January 29, 2022, on ESPN at 8:00 P.M

The Texas Longhorns go into this game with a record of 15-5. Their five losses came against Kansas State, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Gonzaga, Seton Hall. Their best win has come against Oklahoma. This team is still lacking a top-tier win.  The Longhorns are not currently ranked, but they received 61 votes in the recent AP poll.

Texas has the best scoring defense in the country. The Longhorns allow 54 points per game. No team allows fewer points than the Longhorns. Opponents only make 40 percent of their shots against the Longhorns.

The Longhorns are offensively led by Timmy Allen. Allen averages 11 points per game on 53 percent shooting. Despite Allen’s contributions, the Longhorns average a lackluster 69 points per game. The Big 12 program is 196th in points per game in the country.

The Tennesse Volunteers go into this game with a record of 14-5. Their five losses have come against Kentucky, LSU, Alabama, Villanova, and Texas Tech. Their best win has come against Arizona. The Volunteers are ranked as the 18th team in the AP poll.

The Volunteers are led offensively by Santiago Vescovi. Vescovi averages 14 points on 43 percent shooting. Tennessee is very good at moving the ball around as they are 9th in assists per game. The Volunteers average 17 assists per game.  In this game, the Volunteers need to take care of the ball as the Longhorn defense is top tier.

Although Texas’s defense will be tough to beat if the Volunteers are able to push the pace, they should have a chance to win this game. If Tennessee is able to make their shots early, it will be hard for the Texas offense to match. Although Tennessee will push the pace in this game, Texas’s defense will be too much.

Behind their defense, the Longhorns will get their first marquee win of the season. While offensively Texas will struggle, Tennessee will not able to get much when facing this defense.
