Marcus Hammond, 6’3 Guard, Notre Dame Fighting Irish

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish were one of the surprise teams in the ACC this past season but with the departure of Blake Wesley to the NBA, it looked as though they’d be back to square one but the transfer portal seems to have given them a veteran backcourt name to rely on in 2022-23.

Marcus Hammond is a three-time All-MAAC selection out of Niagara that averaged 18.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg, and 2.9 apg, shooting 43.0 percent from the field and 37.0 percent from 3-point range in 2021-22.

He finished second in the MAAC in scoring and sixth in offensive rating (109.7) this past season. He’s an active combo guard that will look to push the envelope in the backcourt much like Blake Wesley did this past season.

Hammond will have some young blood to bring along with him in the recruiting class with J.J. Starling and Ven-Allen Lubin also joining the rotation but he’ll also have some returning shooters to rely on as well that he should benefit from.

Dane Goodwin (45.8 percent), Nate Lasszewski (45.6 percent), and Cormac Ryan (40.7 percent) were the top three 3-point shooters in the Fighting Irish rotation in 2021-22 and will all be back this upcoming season looking to build on last year’s success after finishing second in the ACC.
