D.J. Burns, 6’9 Forward, NC State Wolfpack

D.J. Burns made quite the splash in the Big South with the Winthrop Eagles across the past three seasons. In 2019-20, he was named Big South Rookie of the Year. In 2021-22, he was named Big South Player of the Year, posting 15.0 ppg, 4.5 rpg and 1.1 apg and after putting himself in the transfer portal, he found a landing spot with the NC State Wolfpack.

With the departures of Manny Bates and Jericole Hellems in the frontcourt, there’s room for a veteran like Burns to come in and play a role with what he can do in the paint. He’ll need to show some growth in his game though, if he hopes to take his game to the next level.

While the 6-foot-9, 260-pound forward shot 62.6 percent from the field in 2021-22 and has shot 60 percent from the field in his career with the Winthrop Eagles, he’s taken a total of six 3-point shots in his entire collegiate career.

If he hopes to take his game to the next level with the NC State Wolfpack, Burns will need to show that he can operate on the perimeter and be a mobile presence on the defensive side of the ball in 2022-23.
