Louisville and Kentucky battling for DJ Wagner

If/when GG Jackson reclassifies, the undisputed No. 1 prospect in the 2023 NCAA Basketball recruiting class would be DJ Wagner. He’s a 6’3 combo guard and elite scorer and ball-handler and son of NBA player Dajuan Wagner and grandson of Milt Wagner, who won a national title at Louisville in 1984.

The Cardinals, ever since family friend Kenny Payne was hired this offseason, became a favorite to land Wagner, especially once Milt Wagner was brought onto the staff. Just about every team got out of the mix, except one. And that’s Kentucky, where Payne spent eight years on the coaching staff under John Calipari. The Wildcats, who already have a five-star commit guard in Robert Dillingham in the class but are hoping to land the No. 1 overall group in 2023 with Wagner.

Throughout the offseason, it’s been a back-and-forth battle for Wagner between the teams and anyone could land him at this point. On paper, Louisville needs Wagner more and the family connections would make it a crushing blow if he were to go to the Wildcats instead. Coach Payne had a solid start in his early tenure but this would sting and force the staff to go back to the drawing board in the class for next year.
