Johni Broome, 6’10 Forward/Center, Auburn Tigers

Last year, the Auburn Tigers landed Walker Kessler from UNC out of the transfer portal, and this year, the reward is even greater as they’ve landed former Morehead State standout Johni Broome to fill out their frontcourt in 2022-23.

Broome leaves behind quite the legacy with the Eagles as he looks to make a similar impact in the SEC. He was the OVC Rookie of the Year in 2020-21 and the OVC Defensive Player of the Year in 2021-22, posting 16.8 ppg, 10.5 rpg. 3.9 bpg and 1.2 apg while shooting 55.5 percent from the field this past season.

The 6-foot-10 big man generated a defensive rating of 84.1 when on the floor a season ago, ranking first in the OVC and fifth in the NCAA. He packs quite the punch with his ability to gobble up rebounds on both ends of the floor and block shots. His 3.9 bpg led the OVC and ranked third in the NCAA.

He’s a long, wiry big man that will look to improve the interior defense for the Tigers as they look to make another run in the NCAA Tournament. While Kessler and Jabari Smith are both gone, they return everyone from last year’s SEC Regular Season championship squad. Adding Broome could potentially get them over an even greater hump if he can adjust to high-major play.
