NCAA Basketball: 7 notable mid-major coaches jumping into high-major ranks
Todd Golden, Florida Gators
Todd Golden has made quite the journey in the coaching world, where he began as a Director of Basketball Operations in 2012-13 with the Columbia Lions. He’s coming off his first head coaching stint with the San Francisco Dons that saw him go 57-36 (.613) from 2019-22 in the West Coast Conference, including a 24-10 record and their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 1998 in 2021-22. Following two 20+ win seasons out of three, Golden looks ready to make the jump to the high-major ranks.
He’ll make the move from the WCC into the SEC looking to bring some of the Dons’ magic with him. He’s got some familiarity with the SEC already as he’s spent time with Bruce Pearl at Auburn as a Director of Basketball Operations in 2014 then as an assistant coach in 2015-16 already.
Now with his own squad to lead in 2022-23, he’ll look to return the Florida Gators to their National Championship winning ways of the past. Kyle Lofton (St. Bonaventure), Trey Bonham (VMI), and Will Richard (Belmont) are a trio of names looking to lead the “turnaround” though Mike White’s departure comes at his own doing. His presence on the Georgia sidelines will certainly be a motivation for the returning guys.
