NCAA Basketball: 7 notable mid-major coaches jumping into high-major ranks
Matt McMahon, LSU Tigers
Matt McMahon has staked his claim as one of the top coaches in the OVC over the past seven seasons. In 2021-22, he led the Racers to an unbeaten 18-0 record in league play and both regular-season and conference tournament titles and an overall record of 31-3 to earn his first OVC Coach of the Year award.
He led the Racers for three NCAA Tournament appearances, four OVC regular-season titles, and three OVC conference tournament titles while registering a record of 154-67 from 2015-22. Now, he’ll look to turn things around in a talented SEC coaching landscape.
His biggest test so far this offseason has been salvaging a roster entirely from scratch, something he managed to accomplish across 47 days heading into his new job in the SEC.
He’ll have K.J. Williams, Trae Hannibal, and Justice Hill with him from last season’s squad looking to change the culture for a program that returns just three players from the 2021-22 roster. Williams, Hannibal, and Hill are a trio that combined to score 40.6 ppg with Williams winning the OVC Player of the Year award in 2021-22.
McMahon is headed in the right direction and as he’s coming off the best career-win total of his career, he’ll look to make his mark in Baton Rouge at LSU.
