The Final Four was in reach for the Texas Longhorns but they blew a double-digit lead in the second half. Will it cost Rodney Terry a chance at the full-time job?

One of the major storylines of this season was at Texas, who had to make a coaching change in December. Head coach Chris Beard, who is one of the best in the business from an x’s and o’s perspective, was suspended and eventually fired after an arrest for an assualt. Rodney Terry, who was previously a head coach at both Fresno State and UTEP, became the interim leader for the program.

The Longhorns haven’t missed a beat since the change, with the team going 26-8 heading into the NCAA Tournament. That included winning the Big 12 Tournament, including a blowout win over Kansas in the finals. Coach Terry has been named as a National Coach of the Year candidate by some people but others have made cases against him as well.

This is still a roster that had top-10 talent, led by guards, Marcus Carr, Tyrese Hunter, and Sir’Jabari Rice. An argument can be made that Coach Terry has steadied the ship and make sure things didn’t fall apart but does that make you the right head coach for the job?

The question may have been answered during the NCAA Tournament. After beating Colgate, Penn State, and Xavier, Texas took on Miami in the Elite 8 matchup. This was a Hurricanes roster that had just beating Houston two days prior. Things looked good for the Longhorns early on, leading 45-37 at the half, thanks to 10 points each from Carr and Timmy Allen.

Texas was up by 12 points in the second half, before a huge Miami run gave them the lead in the final minutes. The Longhorns missed out on a couple of chances late and ulitmately lost, 88-81. The reaction to how it happened on Twitter was intense.

The ultimate question for the next few days is whether or not Rodney Terry will get the interim tag off and get named as the full-time head coach. Based on Twitter, there are plenty of folks on his side. Time will tell and the decision made by the administration will have a domino effect for the rest of the coaching carosel.
