8. Michigan State Spartans

Players to watch: Jaden Akins and AJ Hoggard

Despite not having a ton of expectations, Michigan State managed to be the last Big Ten team standing in the NCAA Tournament. They made the Sweet 16 and were an overtime away from beating Kansas State. Now, expectations are set to ramp up a ton for the 2023-24 campaign.

Just about all of the key pieces are set to return for next season. Leading scorer Tyson Walker (14.8 ppg) and wing Malik Hall are coming back for 5th years, while all of the centers, led by Mady Sissoko are back too. Plus, there’s an incoming group of freshmen, ranked in the top 5 overall classes joining.

But recently, the Spartans got some potentially unwelcomed news with two starters entering the process. Hoggard was third on the team with 12.9 ppg, and first with 5.9 apg. Akins averaged 9.8 ppg but is viewed as the best pro prospect on the roster, coming off a year of shooting 42% from three-point range.

If one or even both of these guards leave, Michigan State is still in a good spot. But it could be the difference between having a preseason top-5 team or a 15 team next season.
