In a situation that started out as LSU’s loss, Texas Basketball has gained with Devon Pryor, who is now set to join them for next season.

Early on in this offseason, the LSU Tigers were able to receive the commitment of Devon Pryor, a four-star wing from Houston in the 2024 recruiting class. However, the team only had him for a month, before the prospect decided to de-commit.

Several programs were after Pryor this offseason, including Texas Basketball. And it turns out that not only did Coach Rodney Terry and company land the commitment, but it’s for the upcoming season. Pryor’s move to reclassify to the 2023 class is a welcomed move for the program, which has been searching for depth all offseason.

When coach Terry got the interim tag off, the team had around eight players confirmed. It’s been a slow climb to fill out the roster but the Longhorns recently landed a pair of key pickups. The first was four-star combo guard and former Kansas commit, Chris Johnson. And the second came just a few days ago in Ithiel Horton, a grad transfer from UCF.

With two scholarships left on the table, Pryor takes up one and fills a need on the wing. Right now, there’s rising sophomore Dillon Mitchell and long-time senior, Brock Cunningham. Plus, there’s always the chance one of these guys moves to the four-spot if Texas opts to play Dylan Disu minutes at the five whenever Kadin Shedrick is on the bench.

Pryor also gets in early to show that he can be a rotational piece for the Longhorns long-term. Even if he doesn’t get big minutes as a freshman, he can show that he can be the next starting wing, assuming that Mitchell is gone for the pros in 2024. The team is going to go for a bunch of newcomers once again but now a wing isn’t a priority.
