Colorado Basketball: Doryan Onwuchekwa becomes first commit in 2024 class
Colorado Basketball lands Doryan Onwuchekwa, a three-star commit in the 2024 class. What does the center offer to the Buffaloes in the future?
Colorado Basketball is set to join the Big 12 after next season and there’s going to be a need for more depth and size, both inside and outside. And after losing Lawson Lovering to the transfer portal and likely losing incoming TCU transfer Eddie Lampkin Jr., there’s going to be a need for a center in the 2024 class.
One target for the Buffaloes has been Doryan Onwuchekwa, a three-star prospect from the state of Texas. He’s a 6’10 and nearly 250-pound big man that has the size to be a good interior defender, while also having a growing offensive game that’s developing nicely.
A week ago, Onwuchekwa had announced a list of options that included Colorado. Other contenders included TCU, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, and Xavier. In the end, the big man picked the future Big 12 program, Colorado.

As I mentioned before, the Buffaloes had a need for a big man in the 2024 class. Joel Hurlburt didn’t play last season and it’s unknown what kind of contributions the redshirt big man will make at the D-I level. So it’s a chance for Onwuchekwa to come in and have an early impact and try to carve out a rotation spot for himself as a freshman.
The dream scenario for the Buffs would be to add top-100 power forward prosepct, Robert Miller, to the 2024 class in case star forward Tristan da Silva decides to go pro. But it’s also important to note that the team could return everyone on the current roster for another year.
If that were to happen, it would make them a definite top-25 team for the 2024-25 season, though it would also affect the potential minutes for Onwuchekwa in his first full season.
