Big 12 Basketball: Preseason conference power rankings for 2023-24 season
5. TCU Horned Frogs
Last season: 22-13, 9-9 in the Big 12
The TCU Horned Frogs are starting to find their stride under head coach Jamie Dixon. They’ve made two NCAA Tournament appearances in a row and won 20+ games across the past two seasons under Dixon and enter this season with high expectations in the Big 12 in 2023-24.
Emanuel Miller, JaKobe Coles, Micah Peavy, Chuck O’Bannon Jr. and Xavier Cork are all back while Trevian Tennyson (Texas A&M CC), Jameer Nelson Jr. (Delaware) Essam Mostafa (Coastal Carolina), Avery Anderson III (Oklahoma State) and Ernest Udeh Jr. (Kansas) will all look to carve out roles for themselves in the rotation as transfer portal additions.
Miller has room to emerge as the Horned Frogs’ top option this year after finishing with 12.3 ppg, 6.5 rpg and 1.7 apg on 50.5 percent shooting from the floor. Coles is another name that should grow after playing a role as a key reserve in 2022-23 with 8.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 1.2 apg on 47.6 percent shooting from the field.
Nelson, Tennyson and Anderson will look to fill the voids left by Mike Miles and Damion Baugh’s departures in the backcourt. Their deepest and strongest group should be their frontcourt with Miller, Coles, Peavy, Mostafa and Udeh battling things out for playing time.
The Horned Frogs have some sneaky depth on their hands as they look to make it three NCAA Tournament appearances in a row with another season on the horizon.
