SEC Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2023-24 season

SEC basketball returns for a new season after turning heads in the NCAA Tournament this past season. The conference saw eight teams make appearances in the tournament this past March including the Missouri Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Alabama Crimson Tide, Arkansas Razorbacks and Tennessee Volunteers all made it to this year’s Sweet 16 before falling in their respective regions.

Head coaches Dennis Gates and Chris Jans both have their respective “eras” off to good starts as they look to compete among a growing list of coaching legends in the conference. Both will have a chance to continue their success as well following impressive starts in the conference ranks. Gates led Missouri to an 11-7 finish in the standings in 2022-23, good for a tie for fourth place. Jans led Mississippi State to an 8-10 finish in the conference standings, good for a tie for ninth place with the Razorbacks. Both coaches return looking to do more damage with more talent but there will be plenty of competition around him.

There’s some rebuilding for some programs to do heading into a new year, while others should find themselves rated highly in the preseason conference power rankings. The Crimson Tide return just three players from last year’s 31-6 squad while the Texas A&M Aggies return eight players from last year’s 25-10 squad.
