Virginia Tech basketball returns for another season looking for a much better result. The Hokies went 8-12 in the ACC basketball standings under head coach Mike Young after winning the ACC Tournament Championship back in 2021-22. Virginia Tech finished 11th in the standings and  missed the NCAA Tournament after making back-to-back appearances in 2021 and 2022.

In Year 5 under Coach Young, the Hokies return sporting a lot of depth across the board which should make them a very competitive group in 2023-24. Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor will pose as an underrated backcourt duo while the additions of Mekhi Long (Old Dominion), Tyler Nickel (UNC) and Robbie Beran (Northwestern) should give the Hokies some versatility to work with with a new-look starting rotation.

Pedulla proved he could hold his own as a full-time starter in his sophomore season and returns with a lot more to prove in his junior year while Cattoor looks to go with a bang in his final season of college basketball. Size in the painted area and rebounding shouldn’t be an issue as Lynn Kidd, John Camden and Mylyjael Poteat all return and redshirt 7-footer Pat Wessler returns looking to showcase his development as a stretch-big man in the conference.

The Hokies return seven players from last year’s roster, add three players out of the transfer portal and two players from their 2023 recruiting class as a squad who should battle for positioning in the middle of the pack of the ACC this season. With an experienced backcourt cast and some potential frontcourt names who could blossom, look for Virginia Tech to potentially field a Top 5 team in the conference under Coach Young.
