Virginia Tech Basketball: 2023-24 season preview for the Hokies
2023-24 Season Outlook
Head coach Mike Young enters Year 5 with some question marks in the frontcourt but with a ton of talent and size at his disposal, it shouldn’t be a struggle for him and his coaching staff. Sean Pedulla and Hunter Cattoor pose as an underrated guard duo while M.J. Collins possesses breakout potential alongside Rodney Rice as both enter their sophomore campaigns.
Virginia Tech had a lot of adversity to overcome this past year. With a fresh slate and a sour taste in their mouths, they’ll be an eager bunch with a lot to prove in 2023-24. 12 losses came by single-digits for the Hokies this past season with four of those coming by a single possession.
Mekhi Long, Tyler Nickel and Robbie Beran could contribute in a big way in this perimeter-oriented system, but they’ll need to prove they can hold their own in an always-talented ACC conference. The Hokies finished 11th this past season in the ACC standings. Their new additions out of the transfer portal will need to make an instant impact to improve alongside their developing backcourt.
The Hokies are projected to start at 10th in the ACC preseason power rankings but that doesn’t mean they can’t turn heads and surprise a few teams when conference play arrives in January. They’ve got a few different developing pieces that could turn heads, especially off the bench, which could turn them into a bubble team in the NCAA Tournament by season’s end.
