2023-24 Season Outlook

The Creighton Bluejays return after a historical season with three starters and three reserves from last year’s 24-13 squad. They’ve got a chance to reproduce a ton of last year’s magical run to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament with big man Ryan Kalkbrenner and guards Baylor Scheierman and Trey Alexander leading the charge.

Kalkbrenner has an opportunity to really emerge this season as an unstoppable two-way presence with his 7-foot-1 length. If head coach Greg McDermott can find a way to really tap into his overall production on the floor, this group has the potential to be really special once again in 2023-24.

Steven Ashworth at the point guard role should help a ton to boost the perimeter scoring for the backcourt as well. Scheierman’s 87 made 3-pointers this past season with his 111 made 3-pointers at Utah State poses a ton of potential for them to be prolific playmakers with each other on the hardwood. They should complement each other well in the backcourt given what they’ve done already on paper.

Johnathan Lawson is another reserve with the potential to contribute in a variety of ways. If he can find ways to be effective, especially when conference play starts, look for this team to turn heads once again this upcoming season.

Scheierman and Alexander are two self-starters who shouldn’t have any trouble leading by example for this group in the backcourt. As the other players in the rotation fall in line and figure out their roles, look for this group to make a run to the Sweet 16, at the very least.
