Winners: Pittsburgh Panthers

The Pittsburgh Panthers have been quite the defensive stalwart, granted their opponents were North Carolina A&T and Binghamton but their new pieces in the rotation are showing their fit. The Panthers rank 23rd in scoring offense (94.5) and 27th in scoring defense (56.0 ppg) in college basketball heading into the second week.

Carlton Carrington and Ishmael Leggett have proven to be a formidable duo in a rebuilt backcourt. Carrington made his freshman debut by pouring in a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists on 7-of-12 shooting from the field and 4-of-7 from deep. Leggett posted a double-double in their victory over Binghamton and filled up the stat shet with 18 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals.

The Panthers should surprise some folks where others have disappointed. It’s clear the ACC won’t be as strong as it usually is following the opening week. Look for Pittsburgh to potentially push for a bid as an NCAA Tournament team if things keep up. As they bring along Zack Austin and William Jeffress and the Diaz Graham brothers, Pittsburgh has to keep its foot on the gas with Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville on this week’s schedule.
