Texas vs Marquette: 2023-24 college basketball game preview, TV schedule

TV schedule: Wednesday, December 6th, 8:00 pm ET, FS1

Texas and Marquette headline a midweek matchup, as the Longhorns look to get a big win in enemy territory. Marquette will have all the motivation they need coming into this matchup off a loss to Wisconsin. Texas, on the other hand, cruises into this matchup after a few easy wins against low-level competition. On paper this should be a fun matchup, so let’s take a look at each team.
Texas has high hopes for the season, but it is a little tough to tell how good they are this early in the year. They were able to squeak out a win against Louisville, and then hang tough for the most part against UConn without Kadin Shedrick (they never really threatened to win that game, however).
The Longhorns hit the transfer portal hard and have one of the best backcourts in the country with Max Abmas, Ithiel Horton, and Tyrese Hunter. Their front-court is awaiting the return of Dylan Disu, who will make them one of the deepest teams in college basketball. For now, they depend on Kadin Shedrick and Dillon Mitchell, who are two solid players in their own right. Texas is deep and athletic, and poses matchup issues all over the floor for basically every team in the nation.
Marquette is looking to rebound from a rather surprising upset loss to Wisconsin. If I were a Golden Eagle fan, I wouldn’t look too much into that one – Max Klesmit went nuclear and the Kohl Center was absolutely rocking in a rivalry game. Marquette fought back after a lackluster first half, but they weren’t able to secure the win. They’re still easily one of the best teams in the country, and they’ll be thrilled to be back home on Wednesday night in front of what should be a raucous crowd. Kam Jones, Tyler Kolek and Oso Ighodaro are one of the strongest trios in college basketball, but they need more players to contribute if they’re going to consistently compete with other top teams.
Honestly, I think this game should be a great one, and I could easily see Texas walking away with a huge road win. With that being said, Marquette should be able to win this game with the home crowd behind them. I think the size advantage that Kolek and Jones have on the Texas guards will prove to be a big part of this game, and Ighodaro should be able to command the paint.
Prediction: Marquette: 81, Texas 72
