Texas Basketball: 3 keys for a Longhorn victory at Marquette Golden Eagles
3. Extend Marquette’s offense
Extending Marquette’s offense is something that Rodney Terry will surely look to do this Wednesday. Marquette is a very efficient team inside the arc, posting a 60.6 two-point shooting percentage, placing them at 9th-best in the country, according to BarTorvik. With Tyler Kolek masterfully weaving in and out of the paint on his drives, it will surely present a problem for the Longhorns, no doubt. (After all, he is one of the best players in college basketball.)
On the other hand, Marquette is a team that only shoots 31.6% from the three-point line and has shot only 28.2% from behind the arc in their last three games, according to TeamRankings. If Texas forces Marquette to extend their offense (which means no backdoor cuts, no baseline drives and limiting pick-and-roll) they could be in for a very competitive game in Milwaukee this Wednesday.
Although Marquette is favored in this matchup, the Longhorns certainly have the pieces in place to pull off the upset on the road. It won’t be easy given that Marquette is coming off of a loss and Texas has yet to grab a quality win, but it isn’t inconceivable that Rodney Terry’s Longhorns can walk out of Milwaukee with a win.
