The NCAA Basketball class of 2027 is now in the spotlight for both fans and coaches. And while it’s not as heralded as the 2025 group that saw eight players taken in the first round of the NBA Draft, there are still some quality prospects to keep an eye on.
One of them is Marcus Spears Jr., a 6’9 power forward prospect from Dallas, Texas. The son of former NFL player and ESPN analyst Marcus Spears is currently the No. 1 overall prospect in the class. He’s easily one of the top athletes in the class who defends at a high level and is fairly skilled overall on the offensive end.
2027 F Marcus Spears Jr. retained the No. 1 spot in 247Sports' updated recruiting rankings.

LSU and Texas are two schools to keep an eye on, but don't count Arkansas and John Calipari out 👀

Spears has gotten plenty of attention this offseason, and his recruitment is starting to heat up. According to 247Sports, a few programs are early contenders to watch. Here’s a closer look at each situation and how Spears fits with them.
Arkansas Razorbacks
No coach has been more successful with five-star prospects in college basketball than Coach John Calipari. Just in the most recent draft alone, his two star guards, Darius Acuff Jr. and Meleek Thomas, were taken at No. 5 and No. 32 overall. For next year, they have top-3 guard prospect Jordan Smith and Mikka Muurinen, a five-star forward prospect who’ll likely be a one-and-done player for the draft. Spears would be the perfect replacement for Muurinen and would easily be the safest pick of those options, considering Calipari’s track record.
LSU Tigers
New coach Will Wade has gone the international route to fill up the roster for next year, but expect the Tigers to get more players from high school in the 2027 class. Wade doesn’t have the same history with top prospects, but Spears would be the clear No. 1 option in any scenario at LSU and, unlike at Arkansas, would be the face of the team in the 2027-27 campaign.
Texas Longhorns
The obvious appeal of Texas would be that it allows Spears to stay close to home. Texas has also returned to some level of national prominence under new coach Sean Miller after making the Sweet 16. They have a top-10 caliber roster for next season, led by the frontcourt duo of Matas Vokietatitis and TCU transfer forward, David Punch. Neither of them is entering their last years of eligibility, so unless one goes pro, the frontcourt would be in an interesting spot for Spears. Unless he can play at the three-spot for what would be easily the best frontcourt in the nation.
