The Creighton Bluejays are 0-4 in the Big East Tournament title game since joining the conference in 2013. After a 15-5 regular season and a second-place finish, Greg McDermott’s team is one win away from finally capturing the crown at Madison Square Garden, but will likely have to do it without freshman guard Fedor Zugic.
In the first half against the regular season Big East champs St. John’s on Saturday evening, Zugic rolled his ankle and had to be helped off the floor. Zugic has seen an increased role throughout the Big East Tournament, playing 25 minutes in Creighton’s double-overtime quarterfinal win over DePaul on Thursday.

After going to the ground on a drive to the basket about nine minutes into the first half with Creighton ahead 17-11, Zugic reached for his right ankle and appeared to be in considerable pain.

The 6-foot-6 guard from Montenegro had a season-high 13 points against DePaul, shooting 5-6 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. Since transfer guard Pop Isaacs went down with a season-ending injury eight games into the year, Creighton has been searching for a reliable tertiary scoring option to supplement Ryan Kalkbrenner and Steven Ashworth. Zugic may have been emerging as that player off the bench, but this injury could keep him out for the rest of the Big East title game and potentially March Madness.
However, after his stellar outing on Thursday night, Zugic played just nine minutes against UConn in the semifinals, finishing with four points on 1-1 shooting. Jamiya Neal stepped up against the Huskies, leading the way with 19 points with a game-high three, three-pointers.
Fedor Zugic injury update:
The Creighton freshman is unlikely to return in the Big East Tournament final against St. John’s. The Bluejays were ahead 17-11 when Zugic went down and carried just a 28-25 lead into halftime. Zugic is yet to return.
