The NCAA Tournament remains in the Round of 32 with everything at stake

The first tree days of the NCAA Tournament have been an absolute blast.

40 games. Upsets that flip your bracket. Moments that don’t feel real until you watch them again. By the time Saturday wraps up, you’ve already seen everything from blowouts to buzzer beaters.

Now comes Sunday, and everything tightens.

This is the last full day of the opening weekend. The last time the bracket feels this crowded. And the last chance for teams to prove they belong before the Sweet 16.

There are 24 teams left when the day begins.

There will be 16 by the end of it.

Nothing comes easy here.

And now Sunday carries all of that pressure forward.

All times below are Eastern Time.

Games that could define the day

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Miami Hurricanes
Purdue looked exactly how a No. 2 seed should in the first round, rolling past Queens 104-71 behind 26 points and eight assists from Braden Smith. Miami answered with a strong second half to beat Missouri 80-66. If this becomes a guard-driven game, Miami has the pieces to make Purdue uncomfortable.

Iowa State Cyclones vs. Kentucky Wildcats
Iowa State dominated Tennessee State 108-74, showing just how dangerous it can be when everything clicks. Kentucky, meanwhile, survived one of the wildest games of the tournament, escaping Santa Clara 89-84 in overtime behind 35 points from Otega Oweh. One team cruised. One team survived. That contrast makes this one of the most interesting matchups of the day.

Kansas Jayhawks vs. St. John’s Red Storm
Kansas had to work for it, holding off Cal Baptist 68-60 behind 28 points from Darryn Peterson. St. John’s had a much more comfortable path, beating Northern Iowa 79-53 with balance and control. This feels like a game where experience meets confidence, and neither side is going to give much away.

Matchups that feel like toss-ups

Virginia Cavaliers vs. Tennessee Volunteers
Virginia pulled away late to beat Wright State 82-73, while Tennessee handled Miami (Ohio) 78-56 behind a big performance from its backcourt. This is a clash of styles. Tennessee wants pace. Virginia wants control. Whoever dictates tempo likely wins.

UConn Huskies vs. UCLA Bruins
UConn got a monster performance from Tarris Reed Jr., who went for 31 points and 27 rebounds in an 82-71 win over Furman. UCLA had to grind out a 75-71 win over UCF. This has the feel of a second-weekend game arriving a little early.

Texas Tech Red Raiders vs. Alabama Crimson Tide
Texas Tech pulled away from Akron 91-71, while Alabama handled Hofstra 90-70 behind a big offensive showing. If this turns into a scoring game, it could be one of the most entertaining matchups of the night.

Can the top seeds stay in control?

Florida Gators vs. Iowa Hawkeyes
Florida made a statement in the first round, putting up 114 points in a blowout win over Prairie View A&M. Iowa, though, showed it can win a tight one, beating Clemson 67-61. If Florida starts fast, it could control things. If not, this gets interesting.

Arizona Wildcats vs. Utah State Aggies
Arizona cruised past LIU 92-58 and looked every bit like a top seed. Utah State, on the other hand, already delivered an upset, knocking off Villanova 86-76. That confidence can carry over, especially if this stays close early.

What makes Sunday different

The first round is about surviving.

The second round is about proving you belong.

This is where teams start to separate. Where depth matters more. Where coaching decisions carry more weight. Where every possession feels a little heavier.

By the end of Sunday, the field drops from 24 to 16.

And the teams still standing won’t just feel like they made it.

They’ll feel like they have a real path forward.
