Penn's new 'Big Three' could dominate the Ivy League in 2026-27

After overachieving and making the NCAA Tournament in his first season, Fran McCaffery has built a dangerous squad for the 2026-2027 season.

Penn was picked to finish seventh (out of eight teams) in the 2025-26 Ivy League preseason poll. The Quakers proceeded to go 18-12 (9-5) and win the Ivy League Tournament, making them the conference's lone NCAA Tournament representative in Fran McCaffery's first year at the helm. The veteran coach has obtained an impressive three-headed monster of stars heading into year two in Philadelphia.

Offseason Questons

Penn entered the offseason needing to retool its roster, with senior leader Ethan Roberts (16.9 points, 3.9 rebounds per game) graduating. The Quakers' staff managed to keep former five-star recruit and Duke Blue Devil TJ Power after an impressive season. Following stops at Duke and Virginia, Power settled in nicely at his third school in as many years. The 6-foot-9 forward averaged 16.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists last year and truly blossomed down the stretch. He led the team in scoring and rebounding in both games of the Ivy League Tournament, highlighted by his 44-point, 14-rebound effort to propel Penn over Yale in the title game. Power's decision to return is huge for the Quakers, as they have a veteran star who knows the system heading into year two of the McCaffery era.

Joining him this season is Sir Mohamed, a Notre Dame transfer and son of former NBA pro Nazr Mohamed. Sir is a six-foot-six, 215 lb guard with two years of ACC experience under his belt. He will immediately be one of the better athletes in the conference and should be a force on defense and transition. One thing Mohamed has struggled with in his career is shooting. He is a career 23 percent three-point shooter and 50 percent free throw shooter. Mohamed is a guy that I think can really take off at a place like Penn; more starts and increased playing time should do his numbers a lot of good and then talent and athleticism will get to shine with more consistent minutes.

Penn's other big offseason pickup comes from a much smaller league. Cal Tech's star guard Dorian Glogovac committed to play for the Quakers after a monstrous season at the DIII level. In his freshman season, Glogovac averaged 23. 6 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. He won the conference scoring title and set the Cal Tech single-game and single-season points records. While the jump from DIII to DI can be tough, Glogovac's 6-foot-6 frame and ability to play both inside and outside should help him as he transitions to play tougher competition.

Season Two under McCaffrey

Penn managing to pair a returning star, ACC transfer and DIII superstar together on the same team makes them an instant Ivy League title contender for the upcoming season. Pair those guys with a coach who has made the big dance 13 times and this team has the chance to dominate the conference next season. Penn should be one of the most exciting offenses to watch in the country and will be my favorite to win the Ivy and return to March Madness in 2027.
