ACC Basketball: 10 storylines/questions heading into 2024-25
5) Will the teams in Florida (FSU and Miami) turn things around in '24-25?
The Miami Hurricanes underachieved per media standards in 2023-24. The Hurricanes were picked to finish second in the ACC this past season in the media preseason poll, but they came up way short of that prediction.
The Hurricanes finished 14th in the conference regular season standings this past season. They dropped nine games in a row to close out the conference schedule, 10 if you include their loss to Boston College to close out an abysmal season in the Conference Tournament.
Head coach Jim Larranaga has overhauled the roster with just three players (Matthew Cleveland, Nijel Pack and Paul Djobet) returning from last year's rotation. They've brought in Lynn Kidd (Virginia Tech) and Brandon Johnson (East Carolina) to reset things in the frontcourt while acquiring Jalen Blackmon (Stetson) and AJ Staton-McCray to revamp the backcourt. Coach Larranaga will look to this group for to do better results this upcoming season.
As for the Seminoles, they looked well on their way to exceeding expectations in the ACC. They were projected to finish eighth, which was motivation apparently, as they got off to a 5-1 start. After that, they won just five more games, dropping nine games, proving there's no such thing as an easy conference game.
At 10-10 in the win-loss column, it was enough for a tie for eighth in the regular-season standings. They ran out of gas against UNC in the Conference Tournament but still, finishing at eighth isn't a terrible result. It was their overall record of 16-17, they've revamped their whole roster as well.
Head Coach Leonard Hamilton got Jamir Watkins to return out of the transfer portal while also adding Jerry Deng (Hampton), Bostyn Holt (South Dakota) and Justin Thomas (UTSA). Chandler Jackson and Taylor Bol Bowen are both back as well. They'll need to rely on top recruits Alier Maluk, DaQuan Davis and AJ Swinton to be competitive in 2024-25.
