Notre Dame Fighting Irish showing they can compete under head coach Micah Shrewsberry

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are 1-1 in ACC basketball action following an upset victory over the UVA Cavaliers this past Saturday, 76-54. The Fighting Irish were in control from beginning to end on both ends of the floor as the game was a breakout performance from freshman guard Markus Burton.

Burton led the backcourt with 15 points, eight assists and three rebounds on 6-of-10 shooting from the floor and 2-of-3 shooting from deep to set the tone for the Fighting Irish to follow. Junior guard J.R. Konieczny was right behind him with 17 points and eight rebounds while freshman forward Carey Booth had his best outing on the season with 17 points and nine rebounds.

Notre Dame has taken some early lumps this season but they've shown they can compete under head coach Micah Shrewsberry. Despite their 6-7 overall record, they played above and beyond expectations in holding the Cavaliers to 54 points while shooting 18.2 percent from deep and 38.2 percent from the field.

It was a good way for the Fighting Irish to end the year and it will be interesting to see if they can carry some of their momentum into 2024. After all, they won just three conference games in 2022-23.
