NC State women’s basketball all-time history in the Final Four
By Sam Fariss
For the second time in history, the NC State Wolfpack has made its way to the women’s NCAA Tournament Final Four.
The Wolfpack had previously been in two Elite Eights but couldn’t quite find the right combination to punch their ticket to the next round until they took down the No. 1 seed Texas Longhorns.
The last time NC State’s tournament run brought them to the Final Four was nearly three decades ago.
As the team prepares for its matchup against the South Carolina Gamecocks, take a look at how the Wolfpack fared in the 1998 Final Four:
The Wolfpack stormed through the NCAA Tournament as a No. 4 seed and found its way to the Final Four against Louisiana Tech.
Along the way, NC State took down Maine, Youngstown State, Old Dominion, and UConn.
When the Wolfpack entered the Final Four, they had to face the perennial Techsters.
Chastity Melvin, Summer Erb, and Tynesha Lewis were dominant in the regional games for NC State but appeared to hit a wall against Louisiana Tech.
The No. 3 seed Techsters dominated the Wolfpack on both ends of the court and NC State was only able to produce 65 points. Meanwhile, Louisiana Tech put up a resounding 84 points and took down the Wolfpack in four quarters.
Louisiana Tech went on to lose 93-75 in the national championship game to Pat Summitt and the Tennessee Volunteers.
NC State’s first-ever Final Four appearance didn’t lead to a berth in the national title game but maybe, just maybe, this time around, the Wolfpack can take down the indomitable force ahead of them.
South Carolina and NC State are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. ET on April 5. The game will be available on ESPN.
