NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 6 contenders for transfer Duncan Powell
Earlier in the NCAA Basketball offseason, former Sacramento State forward Duncan Powell opted to go to Louisiana. However, in the past few weeks, the senior elected to re-open his recruitment. With not many valuable options left in the portal, Powell's stock has risen with those still needing frontcourt depth.
Last season, Powell averaged 12.1 ppg and 7.0 rpg as a starter, shooting nearly 50% from the field. That includes a 17-point and 13-rebound performance against Tulane. There are a few teams in the mix this time around for him; here's a closer look at Powell's fit with the respective contenders.
Florida State Seminoles
Retaining leading scorer and rebounder Jamir Watkins was big for FSU to have any hope of competing in the ACC next season. The frontcourt could still use more depth, as JUCO transfer Malique Ewin may or may not have a big impact. This is a spot where Powell could find a spot in the rotation and get some minutes.
Kansas Jayhawks
There's a case where Kansas could be the No. 1 preseason team for next season after landing several big-name guard transfers, while also retaining starting bigs, Hunter Dickinson and KJ Adams. Still, there's a chance that Powell could get backup minutes at the four-spot behind Adams if he can beat out Zach Clemence, who redshirted last season. If he can't, he'll risk staying on the bench but possibly for a title contender.
NC State Wolfpack
Even without DJ Burns around, the Wolfpack has a veteran frontcourt to work with, led by returning big man Ben Middlebrooks. Transfers Dontrez Styles and Brandon Huntley-Hatfield will have a big role, while Ernest Ross elected to come back for another year as well. This is an option where Powell would have to battle with Ross for the fourth big man in the rotation but could find some minutes.
Texas Longhorns
Texas is heading to the SEC for next season and will need as much depth as possible. There are some frontcourt questions right now, especially at the four-spot. Indiana State transfer Jayson Kent and Ze'Rik Onyema are fighting for minutes and there's incoming freshmen, Nicolas Codie and Jamie Vinson could be in the mix as well. There's a chance that Powell could start but also could be left out of the rotation altogether.
West Virginia Mountaineers
The Mountaineers have been the most aggressive with Powell so far, recently hosting him for a visit. They have a completely new roster and don't have much frontcourt depth, with sophomore forward Ofri Vaveh the only true power forward on the roster. Of all the possible options, WVU makes the most sense from a playing time scenario.
Virginia Tech Hokies
Outside of backup center Mylyjael Poteat, all of the other frontcourt players for the Hokies are gone this offseason. The replacements are VCU transfer Toibu Lawal and former Charleston forward Ben Burnham, two mid-major newcomers. There's little proven depth at Virginia Tech so this is a spot where Powell could not only find a role but get legit minutes in the rotation. In fact, he could possibly start as well.
