We’re still less than a week out from the official end of the college basketball season but its already that time of the year when the transfer portal is really churning out the news. Some of the best available players are already finding new homes here in the front half of April and that’s certainly the case for Isaiah Johnson entering his sophomore season.
Johnson is a 6-1 guard out of Los Angeles who just spent his freshman year in the Big 12 at Colorado. From the very beginning, Tad Boyle knew he had a very productive backcourt threat that could score and effect the game on multiple levels. This wasn’t a standout season for the Buffaloes but Johnson surely made himself known.

Texas lands Colorado transfer Isaiah Johnson
On opening night in a surprisingly close battle with Montana State, Johnson showed his potential with 24 points in his collegiate debut and that was just the beginning. He settled into a role off the bench albeit with important minutes and contributions before really hitting his stride, becoming a starting guard early in Big 12 season.
He averaged 16.9 points and 3.0 assists per game as a freshman, but was at nearly 18 points a night during conference play. Johnson made 38% of his 3-pointers and had some impressive late-season showing against top teams, scoring 27 at BYU before a 28-point outing against Arizona in his final regular season game.
Johnson entered the transfer portal and certainly became one of the most notable guards on the market. As just a freshman he was already making plays and running a decent offense that showed signs of life down the stretch. Now he gets to be an impactful player in the SEC as he’ll join Sean Miller’s program at Texas.
The Longhorns loved what they saw from Johnson this past season and are hopeful that he can take a step forward into his sophomore year. While we’re not quite sure on the makeup of the Longhorns’ roster next season, you just know that they’ll be counting on Johnson’s scoring ability in their new backcourt. The big question isn’t just if Johnson can take that step forward but if he can be that dependable weapon on a contending team.
