What Miami OH accomplished Friday night should have been the entire story.

A historic night for Miami OH basketball

The RedHawks walked into Athens and survived a wild 110-108 overtime battle against Ohio to finish the regular season a perfect 31-0. For a mid-major program, it is one of the most remarkable seasons college basketball has seen in years.

The game itself had everything you could want from a rivalry matchup. There were 17 lead changes, 11 ties, and enough late drama to make it feel like March Madness had already arrived.

Eian Elmer delivered a massive performance with 32 points and 12 rebounds. Ohio star Jackson Paveletzke answered with 37 points in one of the best games of his career. Every possession down the stretch felt like it could decide the night.

When Peter Suder calmly hit late free throws in overtime, Miami finally had it.

A perfect regular season.

31-0.

That should have been the headline everywhere Saturday morning.

Instead, the scene after the final buzzer ended up taking some of the spotlight.

The celebration quickly turned ugly

As Miami players began celebrating their historic win, the atmosphere inside Ohio’s arena quickly shifted.

Frustrated Ohio fans began throwing trash onto the court toward the RedHawks players. Videos that quickly spread across social media showed objects flying onto the floor while Miami players tried to celebrate near midcourt.

At one point, some Miami players responded by flipping off the crowd as tensions escalated.

Things continued to spiral from there. Players had to be separated, and Ohio forward Aidan Hadaway was reportedly sent back to the locker room and did not take part in the handshake line.

What should have been a memorable moment for college basketball quickly turned into chaos.

Rivalry emotions boiled over

This was always going to be an emotional night.

The rivalry between Miami and Ohio is one of the oldest in college basketball, with the programs meeting more than 200 times over the last century. Ohio also had not lost to the RedHawks at home in 15 years.

Add in the pressure of Miami chasing a perfect season, and the stakes were enormous.

Ohio had chances to win the game. Paveletzke had a look late in regulation and another opportunity at the end of overtime that could have changed everything.

Both shots missed.

That kind of loss is painful, especially in a rivalry game.

But there is still a line that fans should never cross.

Throwing trash at players celebrating a historic accomplishment crosses that line immediately.

Miami OH earned this moment

That is what makes the ending so unfortunate.

Miami just completed one of the most impressive seasons in modern college basketball. The RedHawks are the first Division I team since Gonzaga in 2021 to finish the regular season undefeated.

And they did it by playing some of the most entertaining basketball in the country.

Miami averaged more than 90 points per game, shot over 50 percent from the field, and repeatedly found ways to win close games. Nine of their wins came by one possession or in overtime.

They also battled through adversity, including long stretches without key guard Evan Ipsaro.

This was not a lucky run.

This was a team that consistently found ways to win.

The bigger story should still be the RedHawks

In the end, the ugly postgame moment said more about frustration than anything else.

Ohio fans watched their team fight all night only to come up just short against a rival chasing history. Emotions boiled over, and the result was a scene nobody wants to see in college basketball.

But the bigger story is still Miami OH.

A mid-major program just finished the regular season 31-0. That almost never happens in modern college basketball.

No matter what happens in the MAC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament, the RedHawks have already produced one of the most memorable seasons in school history.

And that is what people should remember about Friday night, not the trash that ended up on the floor.
