Potential Starters for Virginia Tech

There's not a ton of ACC starting experience returning for the Virginia Tech Hokies, which makes for an interesting lineup projection in the early going, especially with Hysier Miller now off the team.

Point Guard: Brandon Rechsteiner | 6'1 | 190 lbs.

Rechsteiner is the most experienced returner, in the starting department, with two starts under his belt in his freshman year. He made 26 appearances in his freshman debut, producing 1.8 points and 1.3 assists per game. With a much bigger role on the horizon, look for his production to go one of two ways in Year 2.

Shooting Guard: Jaydon Young | 6'4 | 205 lbs.

Young returns after playing sparingly in his freshman season with the Hokies. He made 26 appearances as a freshman for a total of 221 minutes, but as he was given more minutes, he showed he could produce. In 20 minutes against Auburn on the road, he posted nine points, an assist, a steal and a rebound. In their final game of the season against Ohio State in the NIT, he put up six points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal in 20 minutes of action.

Wing/Forward: Toibu "Tobi" Lawal | 6'8 | 215 lbs.

Lawal made his mark this past season with the VCU Rams under first-year head coach Ryan Odom. He produced 7.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and nearly a block per game across 38 appearances as a reserve for the Rams. He reunites with assistant coach JD Byers looking to make an impact on the wing and beyond with his freak athleticism. He also continues to extend his game to the perimeter.

Forward: Ben Burnham | 6'7 | 220 lbs.

Burnham joins the Hokies after earning Third-Team All-CAA honors in 2023-24 with Charleston. He put up 11.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game while shooting 36.8 percent from behind the arc as a starter in the rotation. Given his size and range on the perimeter, he should be a solid addition to the Hokies' starting lineup.

Forward/Center: Mylyjael Poteat | 6'9 | 260 lbs.

Poteat is the most productive returner in the Hokies' starting lineup. He'll look to play defensive anchor after testing the transfer portal waters this past offseason. He averaged 6.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while shooting 64.4 percent from the floor in 2023-24. He'll be looked upon to lead in more ways than one in the frontcourt.
