Virginia Tech Basketball: 2024-25 season preview for the Hokies
Overall schedule for Virginia Tech in 2024-25
The Virginia Tech Hokies went 8-3 in non-conference action this past season, with losses to South Carolina, Auburn and then-ranked Florida Atlantic under their belt heading into the bulk of ACC play.
This season, the non-conference schedule isn't as strong, but there's still no easy victories given the recent changes in the Hokies' rotation.
The Hokies will open the season on Nov. 4 in Blacksburg against Delaware State then host USC Upstate (Nov. 8) and Winthrop (Nov. 11). The Hornets shouldn't give the Hokies trouble but don't be surprised if USC Upstate or Winthrop walks away with an upset victory.
Virginia Tech will travel to Baltimore to face a familiar foe in the Penn State Nittany Lions in the Hall of Fame Series on Nov. 15. The Hokies won the last meeting 61-59 back on November 18, 2022 while Penn State has won three of their last five meetings.
The Hokies return to Blacksburg on Nov. 20 to host Jacksonville then they'll travel to Florida for the Fort Myers Tip-Off from Nov. 25-27. They'll open things up against Michigan then host the South Carolina/Xavier depending on the result.
They'll return to Blacksburg on Dec. 4 for the ACC/SEC Challenge as they'll host the Vanderbilt Commdores. The Hokies fell 74-57 to Auburn in last year's challenge. Then they'll play their first ACC game of the year against upstart Pittsburgh on Dec. 7.
That's a four-game stretch where the Hokies should really show what type of team they'll be this season. The Hokies will return to action on Dec. 12 against North Carolina A&T and Navy on Dec. 15 in Blacksburg before traveling to Philadelphia to play in The Palestra on Dec. 21.
They'll square off against the Saint Joseph's Hawks in the 2024 Holiday Hoopfest in what should be a battle. It will be their first meeting since December 22, 2015, back when the Hawks took home a 79-62 victory at Barclays Center.
It'll be quite a climactic non-conference game before the Hokies travel to Durham to face the Duke Blue Devils and begin the bulk of ACC play on Dec. 31. Three of the Hokies first four are on the road against Stanford (Jan. 8), Cal (Jan. 11). They'll face Miami twice, Clemson twice and UVA twice while facing a number of other foes old and new across the conference landscape.
The last three conference games could tell the tale for the Hokies as they'll host Syracuse (March 1) and UNC (March 4) at home before closing out the regular season schedule against Clemson on the road at Littlejohn Coliseum.
