The talk of undefeated has followed the Kentucky Wildcats all season long, but with their final major hurdles out of the way in conference play, is it reasonable to look at Kentucky finishing a perfect season?

Each season, the aura of the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers grows a bit stronger as the last team to finish a perfect season. We’ve come close, most recently with the Wichita State Shockers finishing the regular season unbeaten last year before losing in the second round to….the Kentucky Wildcats.

After losing in the national title game later in that tournament to UConn, the Wildcats have not lost since, winning their last 24 games and doing it mostly in dominating fashion. We’ve seen them look vulnerable at times, needing second half comebacks in their last two games at Florida and at LSU, but the fact remains that the Wildcats still have a goose egg in the loss column.

Their final two toughest tests were there last two games, which saw the Gators and the Tigers both have chances to dethrone the Wildcats, but neither able to hang on down the stretch. The latter had multiple chances inside of a minute to go to either take the lead or force overtime, but squandered the late possessions.

Now, John Calipari’s team look to be in the homestretch, with the majority of their games coming at home to finish the regular season and their toughest remaining road game is against a Georgia team that is currently 6-4 in conference and doesn’t look like too much an imposing threat on that spotless record.

Assuming Kentucky does finish the regular season undefeated and does manage to win the SEC tournament, neither requiring stretching of imaginations, their next toughest opponent will be the selection committee. Obviously, they’ve secured a spot as a #1 seed in the tournament, but the teams around them could cause problems.

A big part of Kentucky remaining undefeated will depend on their draw in the tournament. A favorable draw would include, obviously, teams they match up well against. Someone like Texas or even LSU caused Kentucky problems with their size this year, whereas a team like Indiana would be a perfect match-up for them. Obviously, among the elite teams, Virginia or Duke could cause them problems for various reasons.

That being said, there’s few reasons to believe that Kentucky won’t be favored in every game they play from here on out, and likely favored heavily until the Elite Eight or Final Four. The Wildcats have every reason to worry the ’76 Hoosiers, who may be looking at their final weeks as the last undefeated team.
