West Virginia Mountaineers: Wrap Up Bahamas Trip

facebooktwitterreddit

The West Virginia Mountaineers wrapped up there Bahama trip in a big way. They showed that they aren’t anyone to take lightly this year. They finished their trip up Thursday evening against CTG Knights in Nassau, Bahamas.

Junior Forward Devin Williams had a big game registering a double-double. Williams was able to put up 12 points and cap it off with 14 rebounds. Jevon Carter did lead the way, however, by scoring 18 points. These two were a big part in the 20 point win over the Knights.

A couple of the young guns were able to step up and have a nice game as well. Ahmad was right on pace with Carter and put up 17 while his freshman running-mate James Bolden was able to put up 13. Johnathan Holton and Lamont West both were able to put up a 10 spot for the Mounties. A few more players were able to put up decent numbers for WVU. Dexter Miller JR had nine points, while Jaysean Paige only put up five.

There was a few things that I had a issues with while the Mountaineers were in the Bahamas; one of which would be all the fouls that were committed. There were a grand total of seventy-three fouls called in this contest alone. That means that 87 free throws were taken. To make matters worse the Knights took 61 of those attempts. This is not what WVU needs to do. They need to work on playing smarter ball, with little fouls.

The Mounties did a lot of good things in the three days that they were in the Bahamas. They  recorded 18 steals in this game. They also did a very good job of creating their own offense through their defense. WVU was able to record 133 turnovers and 95 steals in the three days. This is what the Mounties need to get back to doing. Taking the ball away from their opponents and turning it into easy baskets.

After the game, coach Huggins was asked how he felt the trip benefited his team.

“I thought it was good for us,” said coach Bob Huggins. “They played hard and it was competitive for the majority of the game. I thought our freshmen really stepped up and played well. I thought our young guys gave us great minutes.”

The Mountaineers will get back to the states on Saturday evening. The Mountaineers were able to finish the three day trip at 3-0. They had three big wins, the last one by 20 points with a final score of 94-74.

The second game they played was a 111-34. These were their last two victories, and they were the largest victories. That’s the way that you want to finish a trip like this, especially in the summer. Get’s the players comfortable with one another, get’s the moral of the team up, and giv blowout. This is the type of momentum that you need to get the season started on the right foot.

“This trip was great and I think it was a great experience for them,” added Huggins. “We are going to go on a boat tomorrow and go snorkeling. The people have been wonderful here and treated us very well. This has been a good experience for our guys.”

It’ll be good to give the guys some rest after three hard fought wins like they had here.
