5. Shaka Smart, Texas

Shaka Smart has had a rough time as the Texas Longhorns coach and could use a change of scenery. The Longhorns went 19-16 in 2018-19 under Smart, matching their record from their 2017-18 season. While they made the NCAA Tournament in 2017-18, they didn’t make it this past season.

Despite not making the Big Dance, Texas made the most of it by winning the 2019 NIT Tournament, beating Lipscomb in the title game and defeating every opponent on the way there by double-digits. Considering that Smart was on the “hot seat” by some, this run quelled those kind of takes for the off-season.

Smart has managed to make the most out of his team’s postseason run in the “other” big tournament in March. He could become a candidate for the Hokies job by the end of the week.

In his fourth season, Smart’s compiled a record of 69-66 (.511), a lot different from his start with the VCU Rams. A change of scenery could be due for him.

Reports are also circulating that Smart is a candidate for a UCLA job. Given the job’s location and the overall outlook, it’d be hard to foresee him passing that up for the Virginia Tech job.
