Tyrese Hunter, 6’0 Point Guard, Texas Longhorns

Tyrese Hunter is another player that’s found his way to another spot in the Big 12 after spending his first collegiate season with the Iowa Stae Cyclones. He tested the NBA Draft waters this past season after stepping into the national spotlight with a big performance in the 2022 NCAA Tournament. Now, he’ll look to take his status even further leading Chris Beard’s Texas Longhorns squad in 2022-23.

Hunter was last season’s Big 12 Rookie of the Year, finishing with 11.0 ppg, 4.9 apg, 3.5 rpg, and 2.0 spg across 35 contests (all starts) with the Cyclones. He led the conference in steals (71) while finishing second in assists (172) and seventh in defensive rating (92.2) as one of the top names in the Big 12.

He took over for the Cyclones in his first appearance in the NCAA Tournament against the LSU Tigers this past March, going off for a career-high 23 points, five steals, three assists, and three rebounds on a career-high 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point land. The Tigers trailed by just two points with 47 seconds left before Hunter’s final 3-pointer put Iowa State up for good at 59-54.

He’ll look to be an even greater threat in the Longhorns’ backcourt with Coach Beard leading the way after they fell short in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
