Texas Basketball looks to be in good hands heading into the 2023-24 season under head coach Rodney Terry. Following their 29-9 finish in 2022-23, they’ve got some key additions to fill the departures of Marcus Carr and Timmy Allen as they look to compete once again in the Big 12.

The Longhorns went 22-8 under Coach Terry and finished in the Elite Eight in this past year’s NCAA Tournament. They turned things up in a big way in winning the Big 12 Conference Tournament championship and an automatic bid heading into March Madness. They performed well as a 2-seed in the Midwest region as Terry led them to their furthest result since they made the Elite Eight in the 2008 NCAA Tournament as a 2-seed during the Rick Barnes era.

Coach Terry will look to continue his success with five returners from last year’s squad led by Tyrese Hunter, Dylan Disu and Dillon Mitchell as the marquee names. The transfer portal is where they struck gold in adding 2022-23 Summit League Player of the Year Max Abmas (Oral Roberts) along with defensive stalwart Kadin Shedrick (UVA) and WAC Rookie of the Year Chendall Weaver (UT-Arlington) to boost the roster.

Texas has the potential to compete this upcoming season but everything lies on the development and emergence of Dylan Disu and Dillon Mitchell. They’ll be looked upon to play a big role in the frontcourt given what they can do on the floor. Disu should pick up where he left off in March after showing his efficiency in the paint. Look for Mitchell to grow his game on the perimeter with more minutes on the horizon. If he can keep pace and Abmas can transition smoothly into the Big 12 ranks, they have a chance to be a very dangerous team this upcoming year. Take a look at the 2023-24 season preview for the Texas Longhorns.
