No. 4 Cyclones to host Hawkeyes in CyHawk rivalry

The CyHawk rivalry returns to Hilton Coliseum on Saturday as No. 3 Iowa State hosts Iowa in one of the most anticipated non-conference games of the season. The Cyclones enter the matchup undefeated and riding one of the best starts in program history.

Iowa State climbed to No. 4 in the national rankings behind a defense that has overwhelmed opponents from the season’s opening tip. The Cyclones rank among the national leaders in turnover margin and steals per game, forcing opponents into rushed decisions with physicality and disciplined pressure.

The Cyclones Offense

Senior guard Tamin Lipsey remains the engine of Iowa State’s attack, leading the team in scoring, assists and steals. Freshman guard Killyan Toure has emerged as one of the biggest early-season surprises in the Big 12, giving the Cyclones another scoring threat and elevating their already deep backcourt.

Toure's defense has shut down some of the best offensive players in the country, Purdue's Braden Smith. Iowa State has also shot effectively from beyond the arc in recent weeks, complementing its defensive identity with timely perimeter scoring.

Change of Pace

The game will be a clear contrast in styles. Iowa State leans on half-court physicality, rebounding and defensive disruption. Iowa plays faster than most Power Five teams, looking to get out in transition and create open looks before defenses can get set. In recent CyHawk meetings, the team that dictated tempo typically controlled the night.

A sold-out Hilton Coliseum is expected to generate one of the loudest atmospheres of the season. Last year in Iowa City, Iowa State surged late behind its defense to secure a rivalry win, flipping momentum in a series once dominated by the Hawkeyes.

What's on the Line?

Iowa State head coach T.J. Otzelberger said his team understands the magnitude of the matchup but remains focused on preparation.

For Iowa, a win over a top-five opponent would significantly boost its NCAA Tournament resume. For Iowa State, protecting home court and continuing its national rise remain the priorities.
