The UConn Huskies have won five Men’s NCAA Tournament national championships in program history.

That’s pretty damn impressive.

And… the Huskies are on their way to yet another title game.

As UConn prepares for its most recent Final Four appearance, is this Huskies squad the greatest team in program history?

First, take a look at the case for this Huskies’ team being the greatest of all time.

The 2023-24 UConn Huskies men’s basketball team

Currently ranked No. 1 in the nation, the Huskies have lost only three games all season long (that’s a winning rate of 92.1 percent).

UConn’s only losses this season were to then-No. 5 Kansas, Seton Hall, and then-No. 15 Creighton.

Statistically speaking, the Huskies have an 18.1-point advantage over their opponents. UConn is fifth in the nation with 18.7 assists per game and 55th in the country with 39 rebounds per game.

In the NCAA Tournament, UConn has been seemingly unstoppable.

The Huskies flattened Stetson with a 91-52 victory in the First Round. The Round of 32 saw a 17-point victory over Northwestern for the Huskies.

The Sweet Sixteen held a 30-point blowout between UConn and San Diego State. Most recently, the Huskies annihilated Illinois in a 77-52 victory for their ticket to the Final Four.

Yes, that’s right, UConn has a 111-point advantage over its opponents through the past four games – an average of 27.8 points per game.

The team is led by guard Tristen Newton and center Donovan Clingan on the court. Newton is averaging 15 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. Cingan is averaging 12.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game for the Huskies.

Heading toward the Huskies’ Final Four matchup with Alabama, UConn has repeatedly been reseeded as the No. 1 team in the nation.

Now that’s out of the way, learn (or remember) a bit about the previous UConn national title teams:

2023 UConn national title team

Just a year ago, the Huskies brought home UConn’s fifth national title. With a team, unsurprisingly, similar to this year’s squad, head coach Dan Hurley led the Huskies to another championship game victory.

The biggest difference between the 2023 national title team is simply experience, or even more simply; maturity.

Clingan was just a freshman during the 2022-23 season and averaged just 6.9 points per game. Newton was still a star for the team but only averaged 10.4 points throughout the season.

The AP Poll had UConn as the No. 1 team in the nation at the end of the year but the Coaches’ Poll only had the Huskies at No. 10 since the team went 31-8 overall (five more losses than they have so far and four more losses than possible this year).

While the Huskies still won the national title at the end of the year, they weren’t quite the indomitable force that they have grown into this season.
