As far as putting a different spin on this moment, it could be said that everything that comes after this moment wouldn’t have happened without it. While Jimmy Valvano was always a beloved character, it helps that he had this moment. It also helped make Valvano one of the most popular figures in the entire country, which really ends up being a bittersweet, but awesome thing.
The Jimmy V Foundation is the coach’s defining legacy now. Could his ESPY speech and all the greatness that the foundation has done have happened without this moment? Probably. But I am sure it helped.
