2014 NBA Mock Draft: An in-depth look at both rounds
By Joe Nardone
49. Chicago Bulls – Deonte Burton, PG, Nevada
H: 6′ 1″ W: 193 lbs DOB: 07/26/1991
2013-14 NCAA (32 GP) 20.1 PPG 4.3 RPG 4.4 APG 25.1 PER
I didn’t want to stick the Bulls with a point guard in the first round, because of Derrick Rose reasons, but if Deonte Burton’s still available when they pick in the second round I don’t know how they can pass on him.
Burton’s as quick as he is strong, and he’s potentially the strongest point guard in this draft. I know we’re all looking for that next veteran unknown from a less prolific school to emerge amongst the point guard class (hey Elfrid Payton), and I think Burton has as good of a chance as anyone to be that guy this year.
Despite being just 6-foot-1, Burton’s biggest strength is his ability to slash through defenses, which might not work in his favor at the next level when teams will key on it. A below average shooter with a poor shot selection, Burton wasn’t really a great distributor in his four years at Nevada, which who knows, could be because he’s selfish or could be because he didn’t play with any elite talent.
All of that said, I fully expect him to be drafted, and he’s one name you should put on your “Summer League Can’t Miss” list. — Jared
